Also, all the figures have rotating heads along with movable arms and legs. He has the ability to hold things in them as well, so nasty notes to whoever isn’t out of the question. It should be noted that his tentacles move and rotate. And you see that expression? I really think it makes these toys into something special.Ĭontinuing on, here’s a shot of the Doc Oc character. Very bright colors, along with comic-esqe stylized black lines, they end up looking very iconic. ![]() How else does the guy contain his rage?Īs you can see, the design of the character is classic Hulk but presented in a much more stylized way and much simpler. At least, that’s what my Incredible Hulk does. Getting boozed up on two Sailors and Coke before smashing things. Here we have the Incredible Hulk figure doing what Hulk does best. You really get a sense of character, not only from the costumes, but from the attitude that’s pained on the faces. What I love most about them, however, is the way in which they’ve managed to create an expression on the faces of these toys that make them come alive. Many of these figures include some sort of accessory that complements the figure, be they Jedi or shield carrying American Hero. The paint and costuming are simple and elegant, while still retaining the essential elements of the iconic characters they represent. From a design perspective, they are simple and clean with no wasted parts or space. Hasbro has really done a fine job with these figures. But you throw in some cool design and a nod to Japanese toy culture and my wallet is immediately open and on its way to empty. Anything having to do with comics, movies and general geekery has me right away. In an attempt to make this new vinyl toy both affordable and mass market, they’ve brought out a new line of figures based on Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Marvel Comics characters. While being cool, you can’t find them at your local Wal-Mart or big box retailer of choice. Check out the MUNNY website for good examples of some of the amazing things people have done with these toys. I guess it’s a bit of a phenomenon, especially among artists who use MUNNY dolls as blank canvases for their own character creations. They had a whole stack of these crazy “design-it-yourself” vinyl dolls from a company called Kidrobot (love the name), under the name MUNNY. I first got wind of this vinyl toy trend in one my local Japanese toy import shops at my hometown mall. Thus reads the tag-line for Hasbro’s entry into the vinyl toy arena and, dare I say it, they’re 100% correct.
